This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
